I think that it's a little funny to have people be so weird about asking others financial questions. We all have finances, we all deal with money...maybe others deal with it better than some, but still! Money is money. It's a means to an end, so what's the big deal?!!!
The big deal is if you're like me, you're one of those "others" who either don't deal with money well, or haven't dealt with it well in the past and are now trying to cope with those negative ramifications!
I went to university for 6 years, got 2 Bachelor of Arts degrees, and received full student loans for each of those 6 years. We're talking tuition, books, residence and living expenses, the whole shabang! I think I have $42,000 in student loans that haven't been paid. I say "think" because I don't know anymore. I spent so long trying to hide from their collection attempts because I was too embarrassed to admit that I couldn't pay them back right then, and didn't want to have to face what I felt was humiliation in discussing payment arrangments. It was horrible.
Now, I want to go back to school but realistically can't get another student loan until I pay back the $42,000 plus interest I already owe. I can't get a mortgage on a house until I pay back the government the $42,000 plus interest I owe them, etc. You see the point.
And because my future plans eventually include going back to school, buying a house, opening a business, and possibly undertaking a fairly expensive adventure that I can't talk about right now, I need to get my finances under wrap.
I want to get my finances under wrap.
I have already done the first step and ordered (and recently received) a copy of my credit report from Transunion. Starting on Friday (payday) I will be keeping track of (with incredible detail) all of the expenditures I have vs. income that I bring in, for a month.
The next step I've been looking forward to and dreading at the same time for some time now...making an appointment with Price Waterhouse Coopers to discuss bankruptcy. God, I hope I qualify!!
I'll let you know how things are going!
